Sustainable Colour

By Kaji Mundo

Plant-based, synthetic, and eco dyes, what is actually sustainable? In this introductory workshop, Kaji Mundo looks at sustainability and wet processing, and how to differentiate between types of dyes. They also take you inside their home studio and demonstrate screen printing with natural indigo.

Some key considerations when deciding what type of dyes to use:

  • Do your designs and concept complement a slower production process?

  • Do you have access to plant dyes that are sustainably harvested? Are those dyes using metal salts as a mordant?

  • When using eco dyes, is the processing and dye waste handled appropriately? Do the dyes have a certification?
